ALDI: innovations for sustainable operations
ALDI’s goal is to meet shopper expectations in every store while also reducing the company’s carbon footprint, so customers can be sure that high quality and low prices go hand in hand with sustainability measures at ALDI.
Formerly widely used refrigerants R404A and R134A contribute significantly to global warming due to their extremely high GWP value. Currently 23 ALDI stores are using a new type of natural, environmentally friendly refrigerant, and the discount supermarket chain is going to use this in all new ALDI store.
Circular packaging model – phasing out single-use packaging
Instead of single-use packaging ALDI has started to use foldable reusable plastic containers (RPCs), which have several benefits: RPCs significantly reduce product damage, food loss and waste within the supply chain. These foldable containers can be used for many years, eliminating single-use waste and can be recycled at the end of their life cycle. In one year ALDI has saved 2,890,387kg CO2 equivalent, 56,479m3 water, 201,829 GJ energy, 1,624, 597kg solid waste, and 264,122kg damaged products with RPCs. ALDI has continued to expand its fleet of electric vehicles in 2024.
Electric trucks and vans serve stores in Budapest and Pest County, and the zero local emissions of these make a big contribution to reducing emission levels and improving air quality.
