The Cross-Border Bread of Hungarians – 15 million grains of wheat program is one of the most beautiful and important symbols of the unity of the Hungarians of the Carpathian Basin – said Zsolt Feldman, the State Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture responsible for agriculture and rural development, at the wheat consecration ceremony of the program in Kaplony on Friday.

In his welcoming speech, Zsolt Feldman highlighted: the symbol of Hungarians’ unity is the wheat festival with ancient roots, which is also a celebration of the commonwealth and the farming community. “It belongs to the community that produces our daily bread and works on the fields and with the animals,” added the state secretary, who said that it would be important to introduce the world of agriculture to modern people with relatively little knowledge of food production. He explained that although agriculture has changed a lot over the years, its pillars are the same – it is based on the laws of nature and biology, it works with living matter, and crops are born when there is harmony between man and his environment, when the farmer pays attention to the livestock, to the needs of the plant. In the Carpathian Basin, there is a great need for the change of seasons, especially for the rhythm of farming, which can be unpredictably disrupted by unusual spring warming and then cooling. “Climate change is the biggest blow to our lands, plantations and forests, so there is a great need for God’s blessing in these areas,” he noted.

According to Zsolt Feldman, it should be rejected that agriculture is primarily responsible for climate change, but at the same time, all sectors should be expected to fight proportionately

Just as harmony between the farmer and nature is essential, a balance must also be created between the farmer’s burdens and obligations. In the absence of this, the farmer stops production, the consequence of which is that there will be no wheat, no other crops and no daily bread.

The Bread of the Hungarians – 15 million grains of wheat program spans borders and addresses the Hungarians of the diaspora. Today, it is much more than it was when it started in 2010. The program, which once sprung from the souls of Hungarian farmers, set its banner on wheat collection, and today it unites Hungarians in spirit and creates the opportunity for Hungarian bread to always be on the tables of the Hungarian people.
