As many ‘German cuisines’ as regions
German food products have always been very popular in Hungary, because they are reliable, high-quality groceries made from the best ingredients, using the best technology. German groceries are consumed by Hungarian families basically every day. As for dishes, there is no such thing as German cuisine, because each region has its own specialties. German meat traders still mostly recommend pork, but beef and poultry are increasingly popular as well. The country offers an unbelievable variety of sausage products. In the south of the country various types of dumplings – ‘Spätzle’ – are very popular. Potato and different noodles, for instance Bandnudel or Fingernudel, are also frequently served as sides.
Germany is one of those countries where dairy products are used in innumerable ways. In addition to cheese, curd, yogurt and kefir, the Germans also make special products such as Harzer. There are many types of breads, it is enough to mention Pumpernickel, Mischbrot or Vollkornbrot. Cakes and pastries often have fresh apple, plum, strawberry, pear and rhubarb as an ingredient. Ice cream became popular in the 1920s when Italians opened the first ice cream parlours.
Beer is the country’s national drink and every region has its own variety. Often they mix it with lemonade (Fanta, Sprite), and call it Radler (in the south) or Alster (in the north). Wine is also very popular, there are 16 wine regions in Germany. Most of the wine is produced in the Rhone, Main, Mosel, Saale and Elba valleys. Spirits and herbal liqueurs such as Jägermeister – produced since the 1930s – are also popular. Germans like carbonated soft drinks and fruit juices, e.g. apple juice too.
