Agrometeorology: winter wheat and canola would need slightly warmer weather
The corn plants are developing nicely, the rapeseed is also blooming, the soil is sufficiently moist for them, but they would need slightly warmer weather, however, after a temporary warming, another cold wave is expected next Wednesday, the National Meteorological Service wrote in its agrometeorological analysis on Thursday.
According to the analysis published on the website, the weather was changeable in the past few days – sunny at the weekend, rainy at the beginning of the week, cool from Wednesday – and by Thursday morning a weak frost had formed in several places. The soil temperature measured at 5 centimeters exceeds 10 degrees Celsius across the country.
The precipitation of the last 30 days shows a surplus in most of the country, but there is a deficit in the Great Plain
The part of the soil close to the surface is muddy in many places in the southwest and northeast, it is drier in the middle part of the country, but mostly still has a favorable moisture content. The middle soil layer also lost its moisture content, but it still has a good water supply, and at a depth of one and a half meters, the soil is saturated almost throughout the country, which means a good moisture reserve in case of a possible late spring or summer drought.
The autumn crops are in good condition, their spring development has started early
The winter wheat has started to sprout, the canola is blooming, the good water supply of the soil is favorable for them, but a little warmer weather would be even better. The sowing of summer crops was delayed due to the cold and then a lot of rain, but the sowing of both sunflower and corn has already started.
More and more of the orchards are already past flowering, several varieties suffered from the frosts at the end of March and beginning of April, and then the rainy weather was not favorable for pollination.
The value of the latest vegetation index for mid-April, showing the “greenness” of the surface, increases dynamically in sufficiently rainy weather
The fields and lower forests have turned green, and the green mass of the autumn crops is also getting bigger. The value of the index is much higher than the long-term average throughout the country, except in the forests of the Mecsek, the Transdanubian and the Northern Central Mountains, where the vegetation is a little behind due to the cooler weather in April. In the continuation, new weather fronts will arrive, rainfall is expected in several waves. Temperatures will rise slightly, although by Friday morning there may still be light frosts in cold-sensitive regions. The cool nights will continue next week, the air will warm up to around 20 degrees during the day from Saturday to Tuesday, and then another cold wave may arrive next Wednesday.
