Agrometeorology: the weather is good for ripening

The clear, dry, warm weather since the beginning of the week is favorable for the ripening of wheat plants, the National Meteorological Service wrote in its agrometeorological analysis on Thursday.

They wrote that the soil layer close to the surface in the majority of the country contains a sufficient amount of moisture, especially in the northeastern part of the country, the water content of the upper 20 centimeters is abundant. The middle and deeper layers are drier, mainly in the Great Plains, critically dry in many places, but this is usually typical for this period of the year. They added: more precipitation fell across the country this summer than last year. In accordance with the climatic characteristics, the western and northern parts of the country received the highest amount, typically 200-300 millimeters, while in most parts of the Great Plain only 100-180 millimeters fell. The former areas have more precipitation, while a significant part of the Great Plain was drier than the long-term average. Periods that were several degrees cooler and warmer than usual occurred, so overall the temperature of the three summer months was only slightly above the long-term average.

The heat wave at the end of August accelerated the ripening of corn and sunflower

Thanks to the abundant rainfall in the first week of August, the herds are well developed in many places. Depending on the type of corn, it is in different stages of ripening, in many places you can see mostly dry stands, but there are fields where the green leaves still predominate. The sunflower is in the plant drying phase, which is also characterized by well-developed stands. Neither corn nor sunflowers need additional precipitation, the current warm, dry weather has a favorable effect on ripening.

Sowing of autumn cabbage rape has also started, the moisture content of the upper layer of the soil is favorable for the preparation of the seedbed, for sowing and for the germination of the seeds in most parts of the country, in the Great Plain there are areas that are drier than ideal.

No significant changes in the weather are expected in the next week, the air cools down to between 11 and 14 degrees in the morning, and the daytime highs are between 26 and 31 degrees. A change can be expected in the middle of next week: precipitation may already occur in Transdanubia on Wednesday, and the temperature may drop by a few degrees from Thursday, but a drastic cooling down is unlikely even then.
