Hungarian winemakers are worried
The sassy weather of recent years, the low purchase prices, the increase in production costs, and the declining consumption together make the situation of domestic grape growers and wineries difficult. However, winemakers were optimistic about the quality of the 2023 vintage, although they were more cautious about costs.
Despite the unfavorable effects of the autumn weather, last year brought the expected rainfall, which was accompanied by pathogens and crop losses. Still, the winemakers hoped that the 2023 vintage would bring high-quality wines. However, it was clearly felt that the capricious climate and other conditions present challenges to producers.
The export of Hungarian winemakers has gained momentum in recent years, but a spectacular decline can be observed in terms of domestic consumption. Compared to 2010, the national wine consumption decreased by about 64 million liters by 2021. A similar trend can be seen in per capita wine consumption.
