The third part of our summary of the report deals with the situation of businesses and the impact of tourism. In 2023 there were 11,700 sole traders and 14,700 companies active in the hospitality sector. 62% of self-employed entrepreneurs operated in the restaurant and mobile catering sector, while 30% worked in the beverage service sector. Among companies this ratio was 78% in the restaurant and mobile catering sector and 15% in the beverage service sector.

The gross sales revenue of tourist (commercial, private and other) accommodation establishments amounted to nearly HUF 1,064bn in 2024, which was 17.5% more than a year earlier. Spending related to multiday domestic trips totalled HUF 706bn in 2024 (it had been HUF 632bn in 2023), from which HUF 94bn (HUF 83bn in 2023) was spent on meals in restaurants, bars and cafés. The main destination for multiday domestic trips was Lake Balaton (38%).Tourism expenditure by foreigners and the Hungarian population amounted to HUF 4,104bn in 2023, exceeding the previous year’s figure by 35%. Tourism spending by foreigners in Hungary (HUF 3,029 billion) augmented by 38% at current prices, while domestic tourism spending by Hungarians (HUF 1,075 billion) grew by more than a quarter compared to 2022.
