Wizz Air and Airbus are jointly testing sustainable jet fuel
Wizz Air and Airbus are jointly testing sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), Wizz Air announced.
SAF is an alternative fuel derived from various raw materials, such as used cooking oil, and according to the International Air Transport Association, can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 65 percent compared to conventional jet fuel.
The testing will start on the Barcelona-Budapest and Brussels-Budapest routes, the fuel will be provided by Cepsa and distributed by World Fuel Services (World Kinect Company) at the affected airports until the end of the year.
The announcement quoted Yvonne Moynihan, Wizz Air’s corporate and ESG manager, who said: this cross-industry collaboration demonstrates the commitment of the aviation community to reduce their emission intensity. Wizz Air’s goal is to operate 10 percent of its flights with SAF by 2030.
He added that in this project, they also collect information from their passengers about how well they know the tools aimed at decarbonizing air transport.
Julie Kitcher, director of sustainability and communications at Airbus, said in a statement: in their industry, fuel-efficient aircraft and SAF will provide the majority of emissions reductions to be achieved by 2050, which is why it is so important to effectively integrate SAF into airline operations.
Duncan Storey, World Fuel’s vice president of supply and commercial development for Europe and the Middle East, noted in the statement that the alignment with the new RefuelEU aviation requirements is an important milestone in order to expand the availability of sustainable fuels.
In the announcement, they remind us that the RefuelEU regulation of the European Union will apply from 2025, the aim of which is to ensure that sustainable jet fuel is always available at certain airports in the Union and that the proportion of its use mixed with conventional fuel is constantly increased.
