Dry pet food has increased by 30-50 percent and reward snacks by 100 percent since January
If you have a pet, you know well that the monthly costs can be very high, depending on what kind of pet you own. Dogs and cats are the most common small pets here, but more and more people have horses, as well as exotic birds and reptiles. HelloVidék took a look at how the costs of keeping pets have changed this year, and what responsible owners must be aware of.
Since the beginning of the year, we have already had to raise prices three times, which has already exceeded the calculated rate of inflation, and the year is not over yet. Depending on the brand, dry foods have risen by 30-50 percent since January, the most drastic increase in price can be seen in reward snacks, the price of some products has now increased by 100 percent. There is a cat litter that I sold a few months ago for HUF 6,000 in a large package, now I don’t even buy it for that much in the wholesale market, but there is a type that costs HUF 13,000, the price of silicate litter has skyrocketed
– began Péter Máté, owner and manager of the Nyami-Hami pet store in Debrecen.
Among the reasons, the store owner cites the weakening of the forint in addition to inflation, as a lot of premium and mid-range products arrive from England, most recently the costs of goods from that country rose significantly in wholesalers in August, to which retailers are also adjusting, but there are some that they prefer to give up and they try to replace it with similarly high-quality, cheaper products.
All kinds of equipment became more expensive, dog and cat beds, but also pet cages and aquariums. most of these come from abroad, but if something is assembled or manufactured here, some elements of the raw materials still come from abroad, which also raises prices a lot.
