SPAR entered the Hungarian market in 1990 and opened its first store in Tata in 1991. Since then, it has grown into one of the largest retail networks in the country, currently operating 652 stores nationwide. Nearly half of these operate under a franchise model, owned by Hungarian retailers. With more than 17,000 employees, SPAR Hungary is also one of the country’s largest employers.

SPAR and the KMÉ Trademark

The company places strong emphasis on quality and partnerships with domestic suppliers.

“When sourcing food products, 91% come from domestic suppliers”

– emphasized Márk Maczelka, Head of Communications at SPAR Hungary.
SPAR Hungary first received the Excellent Quality Food (KMÉ) trademark in 2020. Since then, six of its products proudly carry this recognition, which is one of the most important quality guarantees in Hungary.

Domestic Suppliers and Successful Collaborations

One example of SPAR Hungary’s successful collaboration with local suppliers is its partnership with Szarvasi Mozzarella Kft., which resulted in the S-Budget Mascarpone receiving the KMÉ trademark.

“It’s not only about obtaining the trademark, but also about maintaining it. Regular food safety tests, self-monitoring systems, and microbiological testing ensure consistent quality.”

– said Márk Maczelka.

Why Apply for the KMÉ Trademark?

According to SPAR Hungary’s experience, the KMÉ trademark provides significant advantages for consumers, as it increases trust in products.

“Customer feedback shows that the presence of the trademark helps with decision-making and strengthens confidence in both the product and its manufacturer.”

– added Márk Maczelka.
Earning the trademark not only offers a market advantage but also allows producers to further develop their quality assurance systems, as the background monitoring processes support this progress.

Expanding Product Range – Future Plans

SPAR Hungary aims to increase the number of products carrying the KMÉ trademark in the future. The procurement team is continuously working with manufacturing partners to ensure more products meet the strict quality criteria.
