SPAR takes up the fight against food waste
Reducing food waste is receiving special attention worldwide in the name of sustainability. In Europe, nearly 90 million tons of food is wasted every year, which is of particular importance considering environmental and economic aspects. To deal with this problem, SPAR Hungary launched the Munch food rescue initiative, the aim of which is to significantly reduce food waste.
As part of the initiative, starting in 2022, all SPAR and INTERSPAR stores have the opportunity to buy food that is destined to be thrown away, but still of good quality, at a discounted price. This practice tries to reduce the waste of a third of food, especially considering that only 5 percent of food waste is generated in trade. SPAR treats this problem as an important part of its sustainability program and thus makes significant progress towards environmentally conscious management.
According to the VG article, through the Munch initiative, customers can get quality food at a discount in all SPAR and INTERSPAR stores. The process is extremely simple: the selected package must be reserved via the Munch mobile app or the website, paid for, and then picked up at the store within a specified time frame. As a result, the remaining food can be obtained significantly cheaper than the market price.
The success of the initiative is clearly demonstrated by the fact that Munch packages are available to customers in more than 350 SPAR and INTERSPAR stores nationwide. These packages include vegetables, fruits, baked goods, dairy products and cold meats with discounts of up to 60 percent. It is clear from the sales that bakery products are the most popular, accounting for 41 percent of all sales, while the demand for vegetable and fruit packages increased from 30 percent to 37 percent.
