Beekeeping cannot be seen only as an economic activity. Its primary purpose is not to sell honey, but to ensure pollination. In order to maintain biodiversity, bees are necessary – said Minister of Agriculture István Nagy on Saturday in Sepsiszentgyörgy, where, among others, he consulted with representatives of the eight associations dealing with honey in Székelyföld.

The head of the department talked about the multifaceted tasks facing the sector. The import dependency affecting the European Union must be tackled. Instead of high-quality, but more expensive honey, the market is flooded with cheap artificial honey from Asia and also cheap Ukrainian honey. A solution to this is the change in the regulation of honey labeling, namely that the quantitative compositions must be indicated on the labels in addition to the country of origin. In relation to the existing sales problems, the participants of the meeting agreed that a solution could be, in addition to increasing cooperation with producers, the inclusion of alternative beekeeping products that also invigorate the field of gastronomy. In addition, the possibility of joint packaging, packaging and distribution of honey must be created. The task of the future for the sector is to create and then increase the export capacity of bee colonies, because the whole world is struggling with the destruction of bee populations. However, their presence is essential in maintaining the ecosystem.

After the meeting, István Nagy opened the Autumn Fair and Nectary Honey Festival

Here he talked about how honey is one of the most special treasures of nature, which carries the essence of nature. And those who buy honey are not only supporting the livelihood of beekeepers, but also the preservation of the value of our created world. Because bees make the land fertile, the land where people can live. The beekeeper and beekeeping have a special role in this, explained the minister. The Minister of Agriculture welcomed II. Nektária Székelyföld Honey Competition participants as well.

As he said, for the second time this year the beekeepers of Székelyföld had the opportunity to compare their knowledge and exchange experience

The aim of the initiative, which was launched last year with the support of the Székelyföld village farmers’ network, is to put commercial honeys under quality control and professional evaluation and to select the best ones. He added that the importance of Nektária is clearly demonstrated by the growing interest, as the number of participants has almost doubled since last year, so samples were received from 132 entrants from Székelyföld, a total of 260. From these, the best were chosen: 60 products received bronze, 95 silver and 59 gold certifications. received, he added.

The head of the ministry asked local beekeepers to promote honey in addition to unity and cooperation

This is necessary in order to make customers aware that choosing domestic honey is a guarantee of safety and quality. As part of the Honey Festival, Minister of Agriculture István Nagy received the award named after the former beekeeper, Béla Báró Ambrózy. The recognition is given for the second time, to a person from the motherland and a local person who faithfully serves the beekeeping profession, does an outstanding amount to protect the beekeeping industry and support the activities of beekeepers.
