The majority of Hungarians spend less than 50 thousand forints on Christmas gifts, sustainability is an important aspect, but not the primary one
Gift-giving is an essential holiday tradition, but what really matters to customers when buying Christmas presents? Costa Coffee and market researcher Opinio surveyed gift-giving habits this year, and were also curious about the scope for DIY gifts today. The research revealed that 71 percent of respondents are trying to buy gifts for family members and loved ones for less than 50 thousand forints, and although sustainability is an increasingly important factor, price and availability are still the determining factors when purchasing gifts.
Inspiration came into focus for Costa Coffee in 2024: in its Costa Art & Craft creative competition this year, it was curious about who is inspired by a quality coffee and what. Costa Coffee sees a new consumer base increasingly emerging among coffee enthusiasts, ritual artists, whose everyday lives are permeated by the desire to create. Does this spirit permeate them at Christmas too?
Bought or made gift?
A recent survey commissioned by the brand asked whether respondents prefer handmade or purchased gifts: about half of the respondents do not care whether they receive or give a DIY or purchased gift, and in both cases they are happy and willing to invest energy in purchasing or making the gift. Less than a third of those surveyed prefer purchased surprises.
What criteria do we use when giving gifts?
A handmade gift is not only important because it allows them to experience creativity, but many people prefer handmade surprises from an environmental awareness perspective. Sustainability is indeed an important aspect for the majority of respondents (71%) when making a decision, but it is not at the forefront for anyone: even though environmental awareness is important, the price and availability of a gift are given priority when choosing it.
Half of the respondents are looking for a surprise that is truly useful, while creativity and uniqueness are the most important for every tenth respondent. According to almost 10 percent, the most important thing is that the gift is easy to obtain, and almost every tenth person also indicated a low price.
Overall, it turned out that more than 70 percent of respondents are planning to spend 50 thousand forints or less on gifts. Within this, 13 percent of them buy between 5-10 thousand forints, while 36 percent spend 10-30 thousand forints on surprises. 12 percent plan to spend 50-100 thousand forints for this purpose, and only four out of a hundred said that the amount intended for the purchase exceeds 100 thousand forints.
