Another triumph of Hungarian cheese culture – Hungarian cheeses conquered the World Cheese Awards!
Hungarian artisanal cheeses stood out again this year at one of the world’s most prestigious cheese events, the World Cheese Awards held in Portugal. Breier Farm’s Pilisi cheese was once again awarded a gold medal, and several other Hungarian cheese factories also received prestigious recognition.
Another milestone in the history of Hungarian cheesemaking
A record number of entries were received for the World Cheese Awards held in Viseu, Portugal, on November 15, 2024: nearly 5,000 cheeses from 47 countries competed for the recognition of the best in the world. Hungarian cheesemakers once again proved their expertise, as they earned a total of 2 gold, 9 silver and 8 bronze awards.
Among the cheeses that won gold medals are Breier Farm’s Pilisi cheese and Caritas Vidékfejlesztés Gyergyói Kézműves Sajt. “Our Pilis cheese has once again received a gold rating, which for us means recognition of quality cheesemaking and the unique terroir of Pilis,” said Elek Szabolcs, cheese master of Breier Farm and president of the Hungarian Cheesemakers Association. “It is a pleasure to see that Hungarian cheeses are receiving increasing attention on the international stage, and I trust that these successes can provide further inspiration to all domestic cheesemakers.”
Breier Farm and the unique flavors of Pilis
Breier Farm’s Pilis cheese embodies the flavors and character of Pilis. The farm’s Hungarian variegated cattle are raised freely on lush pastures in a sunny environment according to the principles of “happy animal husbandry.” The animals consume only silage-free, natural feed, which results in alpine-type hay milk of exceptional quality – the source of the cheese’s rich, inimitable flavors. Pilisi cheese, awarded gold again this year, faithfully reflects the farm’s commitment to tradition and quality.
