Hungarian consumers remain price-sensitive, but environmental protection is increasingly important
For years, PENNY has consistently introduced sustainable solutions that enable customers to make informed decisions – without compromise. By visiting a PENNY store, we can do our bit for the environment in many ways, in addition to shopping at budget-friendly prices. Whether it’s modern energy-efficient units, products from Hungarian farmers, or even food rescue, environmental protection can be part of everyday shopping.
PENNY stores open according to environmental standards
PENNY is committed to environmental protection, which is why it has undertaken to design its newly opened stores exclusively according to a predefined environmental standard. In addition, it complies with the ISO 50001 international energy efficiency standard year after year and is always doing more to minimize its environmental impact through developments:
In the past two years, it has reduced its CO2 emissions by nearly 10%, which is equivalent to saving 81,000 trees for a year to clean the air.
In recent years, it has reduced its gas consumption by more than half, by 54%.
Electric car chargers are available to customers in the parking lots of 70 stores, and 72 stores and two logistics centers have solar panels.
All of its stores have energy-efficient LED lighting; and it is continuously installing cooling systems using CO2 refrigerant and insulated doors and windows.
Selected from Home: Budget-Friendly Prices and Environmental Protection
For Hungarian customers, domestic products primarily mean a guarantee of better taste and freshness, but few know that by choosing these products, they can contribute to strengthening the domestic economy and reducing the ecological footprint. The shorter supply chain means minimal transportation, less packaging and lower storage requirements, which not only has a lower impact on the environment, but can also make the price of the products more affordable for consumers. It is worth looking for the Selected from Home logo in stores, which indicates that the product came to the shelf from a domestic supplier.
As part of its sustainable approach, PENNY has been taking over and offering vegetables and fruits that are different in shape but of impeccable quality at a favorable price for years under the Girbe-Gurba program, thus preventing food waste.
