The position of the National Association of Hungarian Dietitians on intermittent fasting
Intermittent fasting (IF) is based on alternating fasting and eating periods. They focus on the timing of food consumption rather than the quantity and quality of food consumed per se. The most common versions of IF: 5:2 ratio diet (two fasting days and five eating days per week), daily alternating fasting (0-500 kcal per “fasting day” and optional caloric intake on other days), and the 16:8 time-restricted eating ( 16 hours of fasting and 8 hours of food intake within 24 hours).
The results so far indicate that different intermittent fasting results in a slight or moderate weight loss (3-8% reduction compared to the starting value) over 8-12 weeks. This amount of weight loss is the same as that achieved with conventional diet therapy approaches (restriction of total daily energy intake).
