The fight against climate change cannot be at the expense of farmers
Our country is committed to the fight against climate change, but at the same time we cannot jeopardize the competitiveness of farmers and the safe supply of food – pointed out Minister of Agriculture István Nagy in connection with the UN Climate Change Conference (COP29) in Baku.
The head of the ministry reminded that the effects of the extreme weather of the past period, such as drought, drought, or floods, focused attention on joint action against climate change. We have to find the answers to the challenges posed by extreme weather together, and the UN Climate Change Conference (COP29), which started on Monday in Baku, and the representatives of more than 200 countries will participate in the event, creates an opportunity for this, he added.
The minister also mentioned that sustainable agriculture and forestry play an important role in the fight against climate change
At the same time, it was extremely hurtful for farmers that many people blamed agricultural producers for climate change. This should be strongly rejected. If there is anyone who has a basic interest in the climate being suitable, it is the farmers, whose land is the guarantee of their livelihood and future. That is why extreme green ideologies cannot be allowed to settle on agriculture. Farmers not only cultivate and make the landscape livable, but also provide daily bread for families. It is our common duty to maintain our created world, but at the same time, we cannot endanger the livelihood of those living in agriculture and the safe food supply – emphasized István Nagy. He explained that the safest product is the one that comes from a short supply chain. Customers must be convinced to always choose local, domestic and seasonal products, because in this way not only will the ecological footprint be smaller, but they will also support the livelihood of Hungarian farmers and the national economy. The consumption and promotion of domestic food is therefore a priority task from the point of view of environmental protection, added the head of the agricultural ministry.
