In the way of carbon awareness: SPAR compensates for its events by planting hundreds of indigenous fruit trees
This year, SPAR Hungary’s practice of striving for environmental awareness in corporate events continued: the store chain already organized two carbon-conscious events in 2024. SPAR compensates the carbon dioxide emissions of the partner event of the Budapest Wine Festival and the press conference presenting the annual business results by planting a total of 418 native fruit trees.
“Sustainability is a matter of strategic importance for SPAR. In recent years, our company has paid a lot of attention to the fact that its renovating and newly opened stores, as well as its continuously developing plants, emit less greenhouse gases with their energy-saving lighting and cooling-heating systems, the reduction of paper and plastic waste, selective waste collection and recycling. In addition, we organize more and more of our own events in such a way that they have a carbon-conscious approach. This year, we offset the carbon dioxide emissions of our two events, the partner event of the Budapest Wine Festival and the press conference presenting our annual business report, by planting indigenous fruit trees.”
– explained Márk Maczelka, head of communications at SPAR Hungary.
When organizing its events, SPAR procured the raw materials for the food served mainly from local producers, keeping in mind the short supply chains. The dishes were prepared locally, and the accumulation of unnecessary garbage was avoided with reusable cutlery. The waste was collected selectively, and the unusable food residue was processed by the Biofilter. At the partner event of the Budapest Wine Festival, the food left untouched was delivered to those in need with the help of the Hungarian Food Bank.
