The GVH ordered Wish to pay compensation
The Economic Competition Authority (GVH) has closed its investigation against Wish, one of the largest international e-commerce marketplaces, launched in 2021. The operator of the platform undertook a complex reparation package, including financial compensation for the affected consumers of around 100-150 thousand, in order to avoid the fine, according to the announcement of the GVH.
The GVH investigated the platform because it suspected that the platform’s operator “did not act with the expected professional care during the development and control of the platform’s price and discount display practice”. According to the authority’s suspicions, certain prices of merchants selling on the marketplace may have been untrue, some products were advertised with unrealistically large discounts and false claims, and consumers were urged by a countdown clock to accept some “instant offers”.
During the procedure, the California-based platform and its European operator offered a complex compensation package to remedy the revealed, objectionable practices. As part of the commitments, all Hungarian users who clicked on the instant offer and purchased on the platform in 2021 will receive HUF 1,500 compensation (credit).
The compensation affects 100-150 thousand consumers.
