The export of frozen green peas increased by 20 percent in 2023
According to KSH data, green peas were harvested in Hungary in 2023, in a 6.9 percent larger area, 14 percent more (94 thousand tons) than in 2022. According to the publication of the Agrárközgazdasági Intézet Informative report on spring agricultural works, in 2024 the intended sowing area of green peas amounts to 15.4 thousand hectares, of which 99.4 percent, 15.3 thousand hectares, were sown by May 14.
According to KSH data, the foreign trade balance of fresh and processed (frozen and canned) green peas in Hungary is positive. The export of canned green peas was 27 percent less (41.7 thousand tons) in 2023 compared to the year before. Russia was the most significant receiving market, and canned green peas were also delivered to Germany, Italy, Lithuania and Romania. In the first quarter of this year, the amount of canned green peas sold on export markets increased by 24 percent to 10.8 thousand tons compared to the same period of the previous year. The biggest receiving markets were Russia (2.18 thousand tons), Italy (1.22 thousand tons) and Germany (1.19 thousand tons).

In the first three months of this year, the export of frozen green peas increased by 17 percent to 3.04 thousand tons, while its import fell by 64 percent to 555 tons compared to the same period in 2023. Frozen green peas came to the Hungarian market mainly from Belgium and Poland. According to AKI PÁIR data, green peas appeared on the Budapest Wholesale Market earlier this year, in the 16th week, at a price of HUF 2,000/kilogram, which decreased to HUF 800/kilogram by the 23rd week.
