The price of chicken breast is 11 percent lower than a year ago

Based on data from the KSH, Hungary’s poultry meat exports increased by 2.5 percent to 106,000 tons in the first six months of 2024 compared to the same period in 2023. Within this, the export of chicken meat did not change significantly (72 thousand tons), while that of turkey meat increased by 23 percent to almost 12 thousand tons.

The largest target markets for poultry meat were still Romania and Bulgaria. Hungary’s poultry meat imports decreased by 20 percent to 36,000 tons in the observed period. Within this, the delivery of chicken meat fell by 23 percent to 27,000 tons, while that of turkey meat increased by 45 percent to 3,000 tons.

Most of the poultry meat came from Poland

Based on the AKI’s slaughter statistics data, 428.7 thousand tons (live weight) of poultry were slaughtered in Hungary in the first seven months of 2024, 13.9 percent more than in the same period of the previous year. Of this, slaughter chickens accounted for 306.2 thousand tons (+8.0 percent), and slaughter turkeys for 40.6 thousand tons (+5.3 percent). According to data from the European Commission, the EU average price of whole chicken in the first thirty-seven weeks of 2024 was 268 euros/100 kilograms, which represents a decrease of almost 1 percent compared to the previous year. According to the data of AKI PÁIR, the live weight producer price of slaughter chickens in Hungary decreased by 17.0 percent to HUF 414.8/kg, and that of slaughter turkeys by 14.3 percent to HUF 590.8/kg in the first thirty-seven weeks of 2024 compared to the same period of the previous year. The processing selling price of chicken breast fillet is HUF 1,746.2/kilogram (-11.0 percent), bone-in chicken breast is HUF 1,156.2/kilogram (-12.4 percent), and the price of chicken breast (total) is HUF 1,719.9/kilogram (- 11.0 percent) in the observed period.
