6 tips from Diageo for responsible alcohol consumption
Summer is in full swing, the time for outdoor events, gatherings of friends, joint barbecues and, of course, summer festivals. This week also marks the start of the Sziget Festival, one of Europe’s largest music festivals, where Diageo, one of the world’s leading alcoholic beverage manufacturers and distributors, draws attention to responsible and moderate alcohol consumption with its latest DRINKiQ campaign, and provides useful tips on how to relax and the fun should be a lasting, beautiful memory at the festival and beyond.
The Golden Rule: hydrate, hydrate, hydrate
As you prepare for experiences full of music, sunshine, laughter and unforgettable moments, let’s start with the most important thing, hydration. Here is the GOLDEN RULE of moderate consumption: make sure to drink water after every glass of alcohol. Alcohol dehydrates you, which can lead to headaches, fatigue and malaise, so you should hydrate regularly. Water counteracts these effects and helps maintain your energy levels.
As part of the DRINKiQ campaign, Diageo has also installed free water points at three central locations so that everyone can refresh themselves during the frenzy of the festival. Keep a refillable water bottle with you so you have easy access to water at any time.
Give yourself time to rest between two concerts. Hydrate and recharge in the DRINKiQ Oázis, where exciting gifts and games await you in a pleasant environment, in the shade of trees and sun sails. And while you’re at it, charge your phone and try the DRINKiQ quiz to find out what you think about drinking alcohol, whether it’s a myth or a reality.
Don’t drink on an empty stomach!
If you decide to drink alcohol, be sure to eat a hearty meal rich in carbohydrates, protein, and healthy fats beforehand. These slow down the absorption of alcohol in your stomach and provide long-lasting energy throughout the day. It’s worth snacking on something during your program to replace the salts and minerals you lose while drinking alcohol.
Know your limits and listen to your body’s signals!
One of the simplest and most obvious means of moderate alcohol consumption is if you are aware of your limits and always keep track of how many alcoholic beverages you consume.
A standard unit in our country is 10 g of alcohol, which roughly corresponds to a glass of beer, 1 dl of 12.5% wine or 3 cl of 40% spirits. The quantities served in restaurants are therefore usually larger than one unit.
