The participants of the Marosi PET Cup collected 3.6 tons of waste
The four-day Marosi PET Cup started from Abátfalva and ended with a finish on the banks of the Tisza in Szeged, the total result of which was 607 bags of waste estimated to weigh 3.6 tons. The winner’s cup and the honorary title of Maros Hőse were won by the routine PETúnia team, who have been pirates on the Tisza, Tisza lake and Bodrog for years. The organizers express their gratitude to the local teams participating in the river rescue and the committed municipalities and entrepreneurs of the riverside settlements, from whom they have received tremendous help throughout. The event would not have been possible without the main sponsor Diageo.
The Tisza PET Cup has been organizing waste collection competitions for more than ten years, this time they undertook to clean another tributary. The groups of the settlements along the Maros River dedicated to environmental protection have been working on cleaning the river for years, and the PET Cup has now come to their aid, passing on the river saving experience.
Not only the organizers, but also the local teams used to the river, had an exciting and adventurous rowing, as thanks to the continuous rains and floods, the fast-flowing Maros showed its rare face and taught the anglers a lesson. The organizers noticed more waste than expected: the recent floods added a new dose to the former garbage islands. During the day, the river and the floodplain forest were cleared, and after landing along the Maros, the PET Cup’s well-loved walks presenting cultural values and entertainment programs could not be missed: they organized a PETathlon skills competition and PETaSztár, where they dazzled each other with their own “directed” performances the participants. The organizers set up the central camp site of the competition in Makó: the lowland town and its unmissable thermal spa, Hagymatikum, provided a lasting experience for pet hunters.
