Action’s turnover up 20% in the first nine months
Action, one of Europe’s leading non-food discount chains, increased its net sales by 20.9% to €9.6 billion in the first nine months of the year in its twelve European markets.
Sales growth was driven by an increase in the number of customers, a reduction of the prices of 4,000 products and the opening of 189 new stores, bringing the total number of stores to 2,755. The company expects to open 350 new stores this year, which is 20 more than originally planned.
Action is showing particularly strong growth in Southern Europe. In Italy, it opened its 100th store in Nola, near Naples, at the end of September, while its network in Spain had grown to 50 stores by mid-October. In Portugal, where the retailer launched in February this year, it now has seven stores.
The retailer opened its first distribution centre in Illescas, near Madrid, Spain, that is to serve the Spanish and Portuguese markets. Action plans to develop more than five new distribution centres in Europe over the next two years.
The number of employees has also increased significantly, with 5,461 new employees joining the company until the end of September, bringing the total headcount to 74,501.
