Parents pay through the nose at the start of the school year
The start of school is just around the corner, which poses a serious challenge for families’ financial planning. Parents of children starting first grade can count on the largest expenditure of HUF 50,000-75,000. When buying a school bag, it is not worth making compromises, it is advisable to choose an ergonomic piece that can be used for several years. According to REGIO JÁTÉK’s research, junior high school students spend 10 hours a week studying at home, seniors 14 and a half hours, and two-thirds of elementary school students will also go to training 1-4 times a week, most of them swim, dance and play soccer.
In its research, REGIO JÁTÉK assessed the costs of starting school, and based on the results, parents spend the most on future first-graders, since – unless there are older children in the family – everything has to be bought new, so you should expect an overall expenditure of HUF 50-75,000. Families mostly spend between HUF 20-30 thousand (46%) and HUF 30-40 thousand (22%) on basic school supplies, such as notebooks, pen holders, stationery and drawing equipment, and in the case of the lower grades, the amount allocated for this is over HUF 40 thousand ( 15%) can also be.
“During this period, our average basket value online is approximately HUF 15,000, and in the case of store purchases it exceeds HUF 8,500. By the end of August, everyone usually buys the most important tools, in the first days of September only the missing pieces are replaced”
– said Dávid Gyaraki, deputy managing director of REGIO JÁTÉK.
In addition to the basic equipment, starting school also has other costs, such as gym equipment, indoor and sports shoes, textbooks, on which half of the respondents spend an additional HUF 20,000-30,000. The biggest lump sum expense is clearly the school bag, of which 4 out of ten families will not buy a new one this year. Most of them prefer items under HUF 25,000 (33%), but a quarter of the respondents also look in the category between HUF 25,000 and HUF 40,000.
