green IT: less energy, more innovation
Companies around the world are looking for answers on how to make their operations more sustainable – one of the biggest opportunities lies in IT. “Green IT” solutions can reduce both environmental impact and operating costs. Examples include server virtualization, the use of cloud-based systems or the design of energy-efficient data centers, which significantly reduce energy consumption. Large companies have already proven that environmentally conscious IT is not only good for the planet, but also plays a major role in optimizing corporate costs – reducing expenses by up to 20-30 percent.
K&H’s IT team has been working for years to ensure that the bank’s IT operations are not only efficient but also sustainable. Containerization technology allows the organization’s units to operate much more efficiently, thus achieving higher application density, and by dismantling unnecessary hardware, the environmental impact can also be significantly reduced.
In order to reduce the ecological footprint, the K&H IT team has introduced a new innovative tool that stops and restarts certain application components in a containerized environment on a scheduled basis. This reduces the amount of energy used by the CPU and the CO2 emitted by the components. The solution is currently being used in a development environment, scheduled for weekends and nights, but the system’s extensibility to other areas is being continuously examined.
“Greener IT is not only about using less energy, but also about rethinking how we operate our systems. In the past, for example, separate servers were on standby for a statistical query, which ran idle for most of their time, but still consumed energy. Today, the same capacities can be used by other systems, so operations are much more efficient. In practice, this change in perspective means that we can simultaneously reduce our ecological footprint, optimize our costs and increase IT security. Every small step counts. Extending the lifespan of office equipment, online meetings or hybrid working, or even completely eliminating printing all contribute to making our IT operations more sustainable,”
– said Dénes Ozorai, Head of IT at K&H.
