In Zala County, the nearly 27,000-hectare production area produced an average of 5.56 tons of bread grain per hectare this year, and 50 percent of the harvested wheat is of edible quality, the county president of the National Chamber of Agrarian Economy (NAK) told MTI.

The average yield of autumn wheat was almost one ton less than last year due to the lack of rainfall: in 2021, 6.4 tons of crops were harvested per hectare in the wheat fields of Zala. From the 6,000 hectares of winter barley sown, 5.65 tons of crops per hectare went into the granaries. The yield exceeded last year’s average by 0.9 tons. The average yield per hectare of rapeseed grown on 13,417 hectares was 2.6 tons, as was the case last year, informed Krisztián Sabján, the county president of NAK, who added that the grain harvest in the nearly 50,000-hectare area in the county went well, and the storage capacity was not enough either. problem.

Without rainfall, next year’s crop is also at risk

The farmers cleared the stubble at the end of the harvest, thus preventing further drying of the soil. At the same time, fertilizing and seed bed preparation can only be continued in the south-southwest part of the county, where 10-20 mm of rain fell in the last week. – If the precipitation does not come on time, then next year’s crop will also be in danger, since the farmers will not be able to fertilize, prepare the soil and sow. Krisztián Sabján indicated. He also touched on the fact that the expected yield averages on the corn and sunflower fields have further decreased. Some of the corn produced on nearly 28,000 hectares has completely dried up. The “crop is forced to ripen”, the expert said, and great damage is expected. The sunflower, which covers more than 9,000 hectares, can withstand the drought better, but “the middle of the plates will be empty,” he said, adding that the oil crop is expected to be harvested at the beginning of September.
