Miklós Nagy, general secretary of the Hungarian Association of Packaging and Materials Handling (CSAOSZ) told our magazine: the packaging industry realised HUF 588-billion sales in 2016 – the sector’s output was nearly1.1 million packaging solutions. The packaging industry’s performance has been improving for 4 years. Companies implemented many development projects in the last few years, increasing their production capacity and efficiency. In 2017 Hungarian packaging solutions won 7 awards in the world’s most prestigious packaging contest.

By now the Hungarian packaging industry has adapted to the new situation caused by the introduction of the environmental protection product fee. However, the general secretary is of the opinion that it entails an unreasonably great administrative burden, which results in a competitive disadvantage for packaging companies. One of the industry’s most important tasks is to make sure that with packaging solutions made for the food industry, it can’t happen that packaging material components migrate to the food.

Mr Nagy explained that the most important features of packaging solutions these days are convenience, a long shelf life and safety. Shoppers also want the product packaging to contain lots of useful information, e.g. in the form of a code that can be scanned using a smartphone. One of the industry’s most important initiatives is the ‘Save Food’ programme. The World Packaging Organisation has even integrated it into its competition system and asked member organisations to do the same – CSAOSZ has already done so.

At this year’s Interpack Hungarian products were successful and the experts who were present had the chance to listen to interesting presentations. For instance Norwegian researchers were speaking about packaging 3.0: this means that besides safe transportation and recycling packaging material, a third factor has become important, reducing product loss. //
