Defining what is considered to be a Hungarian product is a shaky area
Not even the recently introduced Food Codex defines properly what is considered to be a Hungarian product and whether items made of Hungarian ingedients fall into this category or not – a new article by Napi Gazdaság ponders.
No place of origin must be indicated on products according to law, but most items can be identified easily. However, consumers still have no clue where the ingredient of the product derives from.. There are dozens of food-products that are considered to be Hungarian brands, yet the manufacturer produces the item abroad or uses foreign ingedients in Hungary. Most items like this derive from the front of dairy products, so it is understandable that it is the manufacturer community of the dairy industry that protest against foreign products most intensely. Meat-products, on the other hand, are not usually part of this tendency, though. To define which items are considered to be Hungarian and thus fall into the category of items accepted by the Food Codex is a shaky area and needs further investigation.
