The foie gras burger is returning to McDonald’s
From February 5, McDonald’s restaurants in Hungary will once again offer one of the chain’s most successful and unique sandwiches, the Maestro Goosey Gustav, made with grilled foie gras. It is customary for Meki to come up with limited edition specialties from time to time, but perhaps fewer people know that domestic promotional offers are mostly put together by the Hungarian product development team. On the occasion of the return of the foie gras specialty, we have collected some of the most interesting or even the most memorable dishes developed in Hungary.
McFarm: the Hungarian classic
Among the first to be mentioned is the pork McFarm sandwich, which was created by the company’s product developers in the early 2000s. The new flavor has become so successful that it has been a permanent element of the Hungarian menu ever since, and what’s more, the Hungarian company has exported the idea to many other countries across Europe.
Hungaricums on the menu
In the mid-2010s, a real Hungarian delicacy was made into a sandwich with grey beef, which was available in thyme and paprika versions and added to the company’s product portfolio. The chain created this sandwich with the undisclosed goal of popularizing grey beef among a new audience, Meki fans. The initiative was eventually realized with the help of a breed conservation farm in Hortobágy. The products of the very successful promotion were also presented at the 2013 National Agricultural and Food Exhibition.
A rare specialty at McDonald’s, even internationally, was the sandwich, which, unlike the usual, contained three pieces of Hartai sausage instead of a meat patty. The idea came from one of McDonald’s franchise partners in Hungary, who was well-acquainted with this Hungarian sausage specialty. The sandwich was not only truly Hungarian, but also very tasty.
It has also happened that a Hungarian idea came directly from one of the company’s supplier partners. The recently debuted Erős Pistás sandwich was the brainchild of Univer, which has been supplying sauces to the restaurant chain since its inception, i.e. for more than 35 years. One of their most successful products, Erős Pistá and the hot sauces made from it, have been included in McDonald’s sandwiches and cheese sandwiches twice in recent years as a result of the cooperation between the two companies, and have also become part of the restaurant chain’s permanent offer in the form of a bowl of sauce.
