VisitHungary: Hungary celebrates World Tourism Day with record numbers
On the initiative of the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UN Tourism), the tourism sector has been celebrating World Tourism Day on September 27 every year since 1980, VisitHungary pointed out in its statement on Friday.
It is recalled that Visit Hungary, emphasizing the social and economic importance of the sector, pointed out that tourism provides the livelihood of around 400,000 families, which also accounts for more than 12 percent of the GDP. Hungarian hotels welcomed nearly 7 million guests in the summer, which is 8.6 percent higher than last year’s record year.
Peaks were also reached in the first eight months of the year: the national visitor traffic exceeded last year by nearly 11 percent, and in Budapest it even doubled, by more than 22 percent.
It was highlighted: on this day, special attention is directed to the sector, which is one of the most important driving forces of the new recovery of the economy. More than 10 percent of the revenues of the central budget are generated by tourism-related consumption and employment. The sector contributed EUR 925 million to the EUR 2.9 billion asset of the services foreign trade balance in the second quarter of this year, providing about a third of the positive balance.
