This year’s Black Friday brought outstanding traffic again: according to data from Visa, one of the world’s leading digital payment service providers, consumer spending in Hungary increased by 18% compared to last year. Fraudsters tried to take advantage of the discount period this time too, but far fewer attempts were successful.

Visa Hungary blocked nearly three times as many, 290% more suspected fraud during Black Friday 2025 than in 2024, while at the European level this indicator is 140% compared to last year’s Black Friday and 40% compared to the Friday a week earlier.

Bence Sármay, Head of Visa Hungary, highlighted:

“Although shopping habits are constantly changing, our data shows that Black Friday remains a key period for merchants, especially in the online space. Where money moves, fraudsters also appear, which is why the Visa network never rests. We protect every transaction, whether small or large, so that customers feel safe all year round.”

Visa’s analysis warns that while the holiday season is one of the most joyous times of the year, fraudsters are still active. The most common scams identified by Visa include fake online stores, package delivery scams, job postings promising “extra holiday income,” travel scams, and charity scams. More information about these types of scams can be found in the Visa report on holiday security risks.

Over the past five years, Visa has invested $12 billion in technology and infrastructure improvements, with a focus on cybersecurity and fraud protection. In just one year, the Visa Scam Disruption team identified and stopped more than €220 million worth of fraud attempts in Europe – and more than $1 billion globally – before they could reach consumers.
