Flower sale all around the year
These days not only specialised shops, but also general retail units sell garden products. We do not have precise data on Hungarian garden plant and hobby gardening sales, but it is sure that practically all households spend some on garden plants. The Research Institute of Agricultural Economics relied on foreign experience when compiling a book about the garden plant sector. Their estimate is that before the economic recession we spent a weekly average of EUR 25 on buying garden plants. More than half of this was used to buy bunches of flower. The average consumer spends an annual HUF 3,500 on cut flowers. If data are accurate, we spend HUF 70 billion on garden plants per year.
Experience is that about twice this sum is spent on other garden products, and maintenance costs represent about half of hobby investment – all this adds up to an annual total spending of HUF 300 billion. Just for comparison: people spend 3-5 times more (per person) in Switzerland, Norway and Denmark. As a result of the economic crisis, cut flowers have become cheaper because turnover fell. Sales decreased in Hungary too and people are looking for cheaper products. When buying as a present, the popularity of pot plants has increased recently, partly due to their good price-value ratio and because they can also be bought in DIY stores, hyper- and supermarkets.
