More people than ever enjoy health benefits of milk but not in Hungary
The overall growth in milk consumption comes at a time when demand is outstripping supply, prompting higher milk prices.
New Tetra Pak figures, released in
advance of World Osteoporosis Day on 20 October 2007 show global liquid dairy
products (LDP) consumption is projected to hit an all time high of 242 billion
litres in 2007 – up five billion litres from 2006. In Hungary people drink 722
million liter milk, 5 million less as last year.
Tetra Pak projects continued growth, prompted by
increasing demand in Asia, Latin America and Africa where governments and
non-governmental organizations (NGOs) have been promoting milk consumption for its
nutritional and health benefits, such as reducing the risk of osteoporosis.
Current LDP growth is driven primarily by India and
China, according to Tetra Pak, which produces annual figures covering global
dairy consumption patterns in 116 markets. LDP consumption from 2006 to 2007 is
up an estimated 1.4 billion litres for India, projected to reach 50 billion
litres, and up an estimated 1.7 billion litres in China, projected to reach
17.5 billion litres this year.
Tetra Pak has been involved in school
feeding programmes for children around the world for more than 40 years. Today,
more than 40 million school children, 15 million of them living in developing
countries, are served milk and other nutritious drinks in Tetra Pak packages.
