Miskolc’s sustainable tourism experience program became a world leader

Miskolc’s sustainable tourism experience program has become world-leading, the Borsod county seat’s Edible Forest program won a gold medal in the Green Destinations competition at the Berlin International Tourism Fair (ITB Berlin) – the city’s municipality told MTI.

They wrote that the Miskolc Edible Forest – Forest Gastroexpress program connects the forests of the Bükk, nature knowledge and local gastronomy. Participants can tour the forest with a professional guide, learn about edible plants and the functioning of the forest ecosystem, and then at the end of the tour they can taste dishes made from Bükk ingredients at the Michelin-recommended Végállomás Bistro & Wine restaurant.

In the final, Miskolc competed with internationally recognized destinations such as Slovenian Bohinj, Philippine Isabela de Basilan, Spanish Lanzarote, Japanese Niseko and Estonian Pärnu.

It was added that the international application material was developed by MIDMAR Nonprofit Kft., which operates Visit Miskolc, with the professional support of InnoTime Hungary Kft.

In addition to the professional success of the program, the award confirms that Miskolc is on the right track: preserving natural values and strengthening responsible tourism can go hand in hand – the announcement states.

They said that this recognition shows that even a rural city is capable of creating globally competitive tourism innovation if local citizens, entrepreneurs, service providers and the city’s institutional system join forces.
