In the interest of varietal purity and crop safety, the proportion of metal-sealed cereal seeds should be increased – the Seed Association Interprofessional Organization and Product Council told MTI on Monday.

The proportion of metal-sealed cereal seeds in domestic production is currently around 35-40 percent. According to the organization, this should be increased to 50 percent in the case of autumn cereal crops, because this way producers can ensure uniform quality and reduce production risks. According to the interest group, the production of excellent, uniform quality crops is of paramount economic interest, which ensures the production of a uniform, varietal-identical and well-marketable commodity base. At the same time, metal-sealed seeds are needed for this, because unlike replanted seeds, this is an officially controlled, traceable and guaranteed quality product, free from physical impurities and pests. It also offers greater crop security and yield, and newer varieties are more resistant to drought, heat and unpredictable weather. Their origin can also be traced, so in case of dispute, the distributor or representative is available – they wrote.
In Hungary, seed is produced on 50 thousand hectares, mainly winter wheat, and to a lesser extent rye, barley and triticale
Almost all of this is sown domestically, on about 500 thousand hectares, with seeds replanted on the remaining area. The arable land in Hungary is 5 million hectares, of which winter wheat occupies the largest part with 1 million hectares – the statement reads.
