Could the price cap be over? This is the opinion of the constitutional lawyer and the agricultural economist
As we wrote about earlier, the Hungarian store chains joined forces: they challenged the price cap at the Constitutional Court. ATV now asked constitutional lawyer István Lövétei and agricultural economist György Raskó about the possible outcome.
The constitutional lawyer says: the complaint may fail due to retroactivity.
“The time that has passed does not allow the products that were originally sold at a reduced price to be eliminated and the benefit returned to those who were forced to give them at a lower price than would have followed from their own business policy”
– said István Lövétei.
According to the agricultural economist, the official price is sustainable. True, this can lead to a decrease in quality.
“Thus, the Hungarian state is forcing retailers to put on the shelves the cheapest possible, but still, acceptable product from their own brand, no name manufacturer, in order to reduce their losses”
– says György Raskó.
Officially priced foods will definitely remain until the first of October. However, the government has not yet decided on the period after that.
