How can waste heat generated during production be recycled and thus reduce energy consumption? This is the question posed by Intersnack Hungary’s first Engineering Competition, where young engineering teams can compare their skills in solving a real industrial challenge. The company will reward the 2-3-person teams that provide the best solutions with a total of 400,000 forints.

Intersnack Hungary’s first engineering competition gives young engineering students the opportunity to work on real industrial challenges. What makes the competition special is that the task is related to Intersnack’s Győr factory, the leading factory in the Hungarian salty snack market. For example, Pom Bär, Chio Stickletti, Chio Maxi Mix and other popular snacks are made here, and the factory plays a significant role not only in the region but also in the country’s economy.

The competition task starts from this real production environment: the participants have to work out how to use the waste heat from the furnaces to reduce the energy demand of the boiler heating the alkali bath. The teams have to prepare a technical solution, cost estimate, thermal engineering calculations and a detailed plan, just as if they were working on a real industrial development. The aim of the initiative is for young engineers to put their creative and innovative thinking to good use in a practical environment, while working on connecting sustainable operations and industrial innovation. The competition thus provides an opportunity for professional development and for the participants to contribute their own ideas to responsible, future-oriented industrial solutions.

The competition was inspired by Intersnack’s proven sustainability practices. Between 2021 and 2024, the company reduced packaging waste by 40%, raw material waste by 50%, and gas and electricity consumption by 10% each, significantly reducing carbon dioxide emissions. While the company has reduced food waste generated during chip production by 27% since 2018, Intersnack aims to reduce the environmental impact of its operations by 50% by 2032.

The teams that made it to the finals will be able to present their work in person at the Intersnack factory, where a jury of experts will evaluate the best solutions. The first place winner will receive a cash prize of HUF 300,000, and the special prize team will receive HUF 100,000. Registration for the competition is possible on the https://intersnack-mernokverseny.hu/ page, where you can find all detailed information about the preparation of the entries, the jury’s criteria and the awards.
