According to the Retail Index of Nielsen, the market position of chocolate bars shows spectacular improvement. Retail sales grew by 14 per cent in terms of value and 11 per cent in terms of volume in the February 2006 – January 2007 period, with the total market approaching HUF 15 billion.
The trend is favourable for chocolate sales in general, which totalled nearly HUF 55 billion in 2006. Th retail trade of chocolate bars shows remarkable concentration, with two-thirds of sales taking places in modern store types. The market share of traditional stores has fallen from 37 to 32 per cent. Real chocolate bars are becoming more popular, while baking chocolates are losing market. Private labels have a market share of 23 per cent, which is 4 per cent more than a year ago. The average consumption of standard and enriched chocolates does not show significant change compared to a year ago.
