Are the employers to blame only?
A client of mine is working for a municipality company in a city. She is in an executive position and despite the fact that she is a top professional too much work is getting the better of her: she is on the edge of burning out. She not only works 10-11 hours a day but also suffers from the fact that many of her tasks are pointless. Her roles in life: mother, wife, child and friend. At the moment her only goal in life is to raise her healthy and smart children. They are the ones that keep her going. Her relationship with her parents is alright and she has a couple of friends. What about the wife role? Well, she and her husband have completely different world views. What is more, her husband is terminally ill. He is still able to perform his basic tasks at home, but he is unmotivated and sees no purpose in his life. My client does her best to help him, but he is unwilling to make changes of any kind. Slowly but steadily their marriage burned out and they also burned out in the process. Having given up the fight after many years, they ended up in a place where they feel life is HOPELESS. She thinks that any effort to convince her husband of making changes to their lives is FUTILE. All in all, she feels completely POWERLESS. Few people have the power in them to fight the burnout syndrome successfully by themselves. Either because they aren’t even aware of the fact that they have the syndrome or because their situation is so hopeless that they have given up all hope. In the next issue of Trade magazin I will introduce a few solutions to the problem.
