Lajta cheese received EU protection
The European Commission has registered another name for Hungarian cheese, thus increasing the number of Hungarian geographical indications under EU protection to 86, so the names of 33 food products, 38 wines and 15 pálinka are already protected in the EU.
Lajta cheese gets its name from the Lajta river, which flows into the Mosoni-Danube near Mosonmagyaróvár in Győr-Moson-Sopron county. In this geographical area, in the first half of the 20th century, high-quality milk production fortunately met with an excellent intellectual knowledge base, thanks to the unique production technology developed in the 1930s.
In terms of the quality of Lajta cheese, the decisive operation is the ripening of the cheese in the geographical area, which requires special expertise
The high humidity and the 2-week maturation on boards made exclusively from pine wood guarantee the development of the “lipstick flora” on the fresh cheeses. The reputation of Lajta cheese is due to its unique taste and flavor, its extremely pleasant, melt-in-your-mouth consistency, and its constant quality. The favorite delicacy of cheese-loving gourmets, which has received numerous professional recognitions, has been carrying the HÍR trademark since 2011. In addition to legal protection, geographical indication protection increases the distinctiveness of the product in trade, and helps the consumer in making a purchase decision, and the producer in promoting his product.
