Both Romania and Poland are waiting for a solution from the European Commission (EC) in the case of Ukrainian grain exports that are flooding the EU market duty-free and putting domestic producers in a difficult situation – Romanian Prime Minister Nicolae Ciuca and Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki pointed out on Tuesday at a Polish-Romanian economic forum in Bucharest.

According to Ciuca, the EC must ensure that the grain arriving in the European Union’s “solidarity corridors”, which open an alternative route for Ukrainian food exports due to the port blockade, can be traced. “We must know the destination and we must prevent speculators from trading with it at dumping prices, because this makes it impossible for our producers and farmers,” the Romanian prime minister’s speech was quoted by the Agerpres news agency.

Morawiecki was also of the opinion that the countries concerned should act together in the forums of the European Union

“We are fighting to ensure that Ukrainian grain does not remain in our countries, and the EU must help enforce our trade policy: the strategic interests of Ukraine and Central Europe are also important, but our economic interests, the economic interests of Romania and Poland must also be taken into account ” – argued the Polish Prime Minister.

The compensation was calculated based on a formula

According to Agerpres, the Romanian head of state informed Ursula von der Leyen, the president of the European Commission (EC), last week about the difficult situation of Romanian farmers and that they need additional support due to their losses. Ursula von der Leyen indicated at the meeting of the European Council that the EC will review its previous decision on compensation and return to the figures for Romania. On March 20, the European Commission announced that it will provide 56.3 million euros of financial assistance from the crisis fund to farmers in Poland, Romania and Bulgaria to alleviate the damage caused by Ukrainian grain imports. Of this, Poland will receive 29.5 million euros, Bulgaria 16.75 million euros, and Romania 10.05 million euros. The Romanian farmers’ organizations called the amount “ridiculously small”. Klaus Iohannis told the Romanian journalists accredited to Brussels at the EU summit: the procedure for this aid was that the Ministry of Agriculture sent the necessary data to the European Commission, which determined the amount of support for each member state based on a formula without negotiations. He added that he thinks it is strange that the EC made the decision based on a formula only, and that no consultation took place with the member states concerned. “The European Commission should have kept in mind that we made huge sacrifices to facilitate Ukrainian grain exports. It didn’t. I don’t know why not, but it will become clear. It’s unfortunate that such ultra-bureaucratic approaches raise doubts about the good faith of the European Commission,” he pointed out. the Romanian president.
