Since Hungary’s EU accession, the number of pigs decreased by nearly two million
Currently, the number of the Hungarian pigs are on Austrian level, about 3.2 million – said Menczel Lászlóné, secretary of the Livestock and Meat Product Board (VHT).
The expert added that the number of pigs in Hungary in the year of accession (2004), was around 5 million. The drastic decline occurred after the EU animal welfare and environmental standards became mandatory for the Hungarian farmers. The implementation of these standards required significant resources and some of the farmers could not keep up with – reports MTI.
