Tourist bus connecting Saxony attractions launched in Transylvania under the name UNESCO bus
A tourist service called UNESCO Bus has been launched in Transylvania by a tourism agency to compensate for the difficulty of public transport in reaching the smaller settlements of the region, famous for its medieval fortified churches.
The minibuses operated in the Brasov, Sibiu and Sighisoara regions operate in a hop-on, hop-off system similar to tourist buses used for sightseeing; you can get on and off at any stop and then get back on the next one.
The services operated by the Carpathian Travel Center connect the sights of the southern Transylvanian region, once inhabited by the Saxons, on three routes, with a main emphasis on UNESCO World Heritage sites.
The list of attractions in Sibiu, Brasov and Mureș counties also includes medieval fortified churches, castles, traditional houses and natural attractions. The services operate on different days of the week – both weekdays and weekends.
The blue route from Sibiu leads to Sighisoara, a World Heritage Site for its old town, via Medgyes, passing through villages such as Valea Viilor (UNESCO-listed for its fortified church) and Berethalom (Biertan). It also passes through Alma Vii (Alma Vii), whose 14th-century fortified church received the European Heritage Award last year and also won the public vote.
The much longer yellow route, also starting from Sibiu, includes three other towns in addition to Sighisoara: Agnita, Dumbraveni and Copsa Mare, but passengers can also stop off in several other villages to take a look around.
The red route from Brașov to Sighisoara includes the most popular Transylvanian Saxon villages: Viscri and Saschiz. In addition to other settlements, the bus also stops at Rupea, famous for its castle towering above the city.
