Lake Balaton’s sustainability program, dredging of the lake, restarts
A government decision has been issued stating that the comprehensive sustainability program of Lake Balaton can be restarted with a budget of one and a half billion forints; dredging of the lake should begin by the end of October – the Minister of Public Administration and Regional Development announced on Tuesday in Révfülöp.
Tibor Navracsics said at a press conference held on the shores of Lake Balaton that the government had accepted the joint proposal of the Ministry of Regional Development and the Ministry of Energy.
He emphasized that the water quality of the lake remains excellent, tourists can still enjoy great experiences, but we must also think about the future. Warning signs regarding the sustainability of Lake Balaton are increasing – he said.
The government decision on the sustainability of Lake Balaton, adopted in 2021, which deals with medium- and long-term action plans, is still in force, the current government decision has put forward a short-term action program – the minister explained.
The dredging – in the absence of its own machinery – will be carried out by external contractors. The preparations, including public procurement, must be completed by the end of September – explained Tibor Navracsics.
He highlighted that Lake Balaton is not only a holiday destination, but also a place to live. “It is also very important for the communities, local governments and citizens living here that we can preserve this extremely vulnerable natural and ecological treasure,” he said. That is why the government decided to relaunch the action plan that ensures the sustainability of Lake Balaton and its region – he added.
