The displays, supplied by pallet pooling provider Chep, are made from over 80% recycled plastic and are designed to significantly reduce packaging waste and CO₂ emissions, Lebensmittelpraxis reported.
According to Chep, each display can save up to 3.6 kilograms of cardboard waste and 5.36 kilograms of CO₂ emissions compared to conventional cardboard displays. In total, Chep will supply 46,000 reusable display bases in multiple waves, which will be used to create 9,200 displays for dm’s own-brand sun care range, Sundance.
Dagmar Glatz, head of ecological sustainability at dm, emphasized the company’s commitment to resource conservation: “Protecting resources is firmly anchored in our corporate strategy. This reusable system allows us to reduce cardboard use and avoid emissions.”
Chep reports that the new displays reduce packaging waste by 57% and CO₂ emissions by 34% versus traditional alternatives. After use, the display bases are cleaned, checked, and returned to circulation for reuse.
The concept was first tested in dm stores in 2023, with positive feedback regarding the displays’ stability and ease of handling. Encouraged by these results, dm and Chep are now scaling the initiative across Europe.
