Oreo production is back in Ukraine
Mondelez International, the well-known food industry giant, made a significant step forward when it announced that it will restart the production of Oreo cookies in Ukraine. This move comes two years after their plant in Trostyanets, located in the eastern part of the country, suffered severe damage during the Russian invasion.
The factory in Trosztyanec, which partially reopened its doors for the production of chocolates last year, has now been completely rebuilt. Mondelez emphasized that the Oreo cookies and other chocolate products made at the Ukrainian plant are not exported to neighboring Russia. Also respecting the current geopolitical situation.
The company currently has three factories in Russia, where they continue to sell locally despite boycotts by workers and investors, among others, and calls for them to shut down. Mondelez has made its Russian business independent by the end of 2023 and appointed new management in Europe, including Russia, earlier this year.
Mondelez’s rival Nestle will also continue to sell products in Russia as the food is not subject to international sanctions. While the Trostyanets plant was being repaired, Mondelez imported its products to Ukraine. However, now the products from the Ukrainian factory go not only to the domestic market, but also to Georgia and Kazakhstan, in contrast to the previous practice, when factories in Russia supplied these markets.
