Our country achieved another success in the fight against African swine fever
As a result of the epidemic prevention measures introduced and consistently implemented in recent years, it was possible to reduce the African swine fever (ASP) risk classification in some areas. Thanks to this, the epidemic prevention restrictions of the affected areas have also been eased, thereby significantly expanding the commercial opportunities of local farmers and food businesses.
At its September meeting, the European Commission’s Animal Health Committee (PAFF) accepted Hungary’s proposal to reduce ASP-infected and high-risk areas. As a result of the decision, the classification of risk areas in the counties of Békés, Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok and Pest was significantly changed: in the county of Békés, the infected area was completely eliminated, while in the majority of the county of Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok.
At the same time, a significant part of the previously high-risk areas of all three counties became medium-risk
In the area that has become a medium risk, domestic pigs can be marketed, exported to another member state, wild boar carcasses can be used and sold without restrictions from the ASP point of view. Conditions will also become more favorable in areas that become high-risk, as domestic pigs can be transported domestically without restrictions, and the possibility of wild boars being processed and used domestically instead of the previous disposal is opened up. The reclassification is therefore extremely favorable for Hungarian livestock breeders, food producers and game farmers alike.
