Skyr Shortages Hit German Supermarkets Amid Social Media Hype
Supermarkets and discounters across Germany are struggling with Skyr shortages as viral social media trends send demand soaring. Major retail chains report that the sudden surge has outpaced production capacity, leaving shelves partially empty for weeks.
Rewe says demand has been “exceptionally high” since early February, causing regional availability issues and temporary stockouts. According to the company, the situation is unlikely to ease before Easter. Edeka, Kaufland, Lidl and Aldi Nord have also observed a noticeable spike in customer interest.
Online grocer Picnic reports that Skyr sales have doubled compared to the end of last year. Co‑founder Frederic Knaudt attributes the shortages to TikTok and Instagram recipe trends. Earlier this year, the “Skyr‑Lotus cheesecake” went viral, while the latest craze mixes Skyr with energy drinks as a high‑protein snack. Although availability has improved slightly, shortages persist.
Arla, one of the main Skyr producers, confirms that demand is far exceeding current production capacity. The company says stabilising supply is a top priority and that it is already evaluating options to expand capacity.
Skyr, a traditional Icelandic dairy product similar to yogurt but classified as fresh cheese, is especially popular among athletes due to its low fat content and high protein level — more than 10 grams per 100 grams. Germany’s Federal Centre for Nutrition recommends low‑fat quark as an alternative, which can be mixed with milk or sparkling water for a creamy texture.
High‑protein diets remain a strong trend in Germany, reflected in rising consumption of poultry and eggs. The ongoing Skyr shortage shows just how quickly social media trends can disrupt the market.
