New Zealand has banned plastic bags used to store vegetables and fruits in stores
New Zealand has become the first in the world to extend the ban on plastic bags to the thin plastic bags that are typically used when buying fruit or vegetables in stores, the BBC wrote on its website on Monday.
The decision, which took effect on Saturday, is part of a wider government campaign against single-use plastics.
Most customers already take their own bags to the shops after larger plastic bags were banned in 2019. Similar restrictions have been introduced in many countries in recent years.
An official from the Ministry of Environmental Protection underlined: New Zealand produces too much plastic waste. He added that more than one billion plastic bags have been saved since the 2019 ban came into force.
